What makes an invoice a tax invoice

A tax invoice is a normal invoice plus the tax-specific details your registration requires:

• Your tax registration number (VAT ID, ABN, GSTIN, BN and so on) — usually placed under your address or in the notes field.
• The tax rate applied, shown explicitly (e.g. “VAT 20%”).
• The tax amount, as its own line separate from the net total.
• The total including tax, clearly readable.

Common thresholds and edge cases

Most regimes only require full tax invoices above a small threshold (Australia: sales over AUD 82.50 including GST; the UK allows simplified invoices under £250). For cross-border B2B services in the EU, the reverse-charge mechanism usually applies instead — write “VAT reverse charged” on the invoice and keep your client's VAT ID on record.
